Ever since we have been hit by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of learning new skills has become even more important and relevant in our lives. We have seen how difficult it is to survive in this world due to the fierce competition among the masses to achieve success at an early age.

Recently, our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has highlighted the importance of Upskilling the Youth and reskilling them during his speech.

The country’s youth are responsible for taking India to greater heights by developing a smart and skilled workforce. They are the future leaders who have the power to bring a change to the country.

It is essential to understand that no matter how old we are, learning has no limits. This trust was evident when our Prime Minister Narendra  Modi made his speech on Upskilling the youth on 15th July 2021.

According to a statement made by PM Modi, there are more than 900 skills that are essential to both personal and professional lives.

What is Upskilling?

We have already mentioned in the introduction regarding our Prime Minister speaking about the importance and benefits of upskilling for the youth and its emphasis on our lives and the people around us.

So, what does upskilling mean? What are the benefits of upskilling?

In simple words, Upskilling means learning new and additional skills which will help you acquire relevant competencies required to stay updated with the industry demands.

It is essential to keep learning and growing in life as there is no age for learning something new.

There might have been times when we see something, and we want to try it or learn it. But we often stop ourselves from trying something new due to the fear of what others will think? How will we conquer the challenges? As a result, we often get scared and back off.

But is it the right approach?

It is important to follow your heart and keep learning new things.

In a democratic country like India, the Youth are the trendsetters. More than half of the population in our country is youth. The World Youth Skills Day is celebrated every year on 12th August.

Therefore, the Government lays so much importance on the development of the youth, from Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao to Skill India Mission; the Government of India has been making consistent efforts to Upskill the youth.

However, youth employment in India is a significant obstacle, which we can overcome only if we work hand in hand with the government.

The only solution to this problem is by giving skills to the youth which will train them and help them stand out from the crowd and help them compete in the huge market.

Wondering how many youths have received skill-based training?

According to a report, only 2% of India’s total workforce has received skill training.

In this digital age, Upskilling and Reskilling have become extremely important for the youth. The world around us is constantly evolving. The skills which were crucial 5 years ago no more hold any relevance in the market.

Therefore, it is important to upskill yourself and keep learning something new, which will add to your existing knowledge and skills and help you become a valuable asset in any organization you join.

This will help you become industry-ready. This is not only a one-way process while the employees try to learn new skills and upskill themselves; it is also extremely important for the organisations to arrange for regular upskilling and training sessions.

This will benefit the employees and help the company have an upper edge over the other competitors.

How Internships and Online Courses can help in Upskilling

Since the onset of the pandemic, the importance of internships has increased rapidly. Everyone is working and studying from home, making each of them want to learn new skills to make their free time productive.

Taking online courses or internships is the best way to do so.

There are well-recognized platforms like Udemy, Coursera, Verzeo and many more, helping students learn new skills through online courses or internships.

These platforms offer a variety of online courses and Internship programs to the students to choose from. These programs prepare the students before they enter the professional world and make them industry-ready.

While an internship also helps the students decide which field interests them the most and which field they want to enter in the future, ultimately helping them in upskilling and reskilling.

Online learning emerged as a safe and viable option for education continuity as the COVID-19 pandemic turned personal and professional worlds upside down.

Even before the pandemic, the global E-learning market was already seeing massive annual global growth, but this pandemic has promoted further growth.

It is expected to reach $336.98 billion by 2026, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.1% from 2018 to 2026 (Syngene Research, 2019).

Importance of Upskilling

The world is changing faster than ever now! Especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, things have changed drastically for each one of us. To keep up with the new normal, it is extremely important to understand the importance of upskilling and learning new skills.

Businesses can survive only if they understand the demands and needs of the consumer, with the changing times.

Upskilling and reskilling have become the need of the hour now, as it will help the people understand their customers better and help make a mark in the market. It will help create a fit for the future workforce, which will benefit the market and the country’s economy.

Upskilling will help the youth not only work hard but also work smarter.

Companies worldwide are now looking for ways to make their work easy by doing smart work, which will help the employees work efficiently.

The work from home culture has definitely changed a lot of things for all of us.

Not only has the pandemic brought masks with it, but it has also changed the job opportunities for all of us. This is the main reason why upskilling and reskilling has become more important than ever before.

The youth is young and can adapt to change really fast.

Therefore so much emphasis is being laid on the importance of upskilling the youth and keeping them up to date.

Upskilling the youth will help create a flexible work culture, where the youth will not only be handicapped with one skill. They can learn different skills and work on different things.

This will make it easier for the organizations to get the work done and help the employees build confidence and growth.

It goes without saying that in the changing times, it has become extremely important for the employees to upskill themselves, move along with the changing needs of the times, and align with the new normal.

The Skill India Mission launched by the government in the year 2015 was with the aim to teach skills to the youth by 2022.

This plan may sound very unrealistic as of now, as we still have a long way ahead, but as we said before, nothing is impossible. If we try together, we can definitely reach the target together.

It may sound a little difficult to us, but it is impossible to keep trying until we achieve the goal.

Conclusion: Upskilling the Youth

We have spoken about what is upskilling and why it is important in the current times. The pandemic has come with the plan to teach us many things.

The new skills that we will learn will help us grow in life, not only professionally but also personally.

We need to understand the need to keep learning and growing in life.

This will help us have the edge over the other organizations and will make us stand out in the crowd.

We can learn new things, and there is no certain age to learn something. Therefore, let’s challenge ourselves to become better by learning something new!
